Nobody is thrilled about cleaning up after their dog. More importantly, dog waste is not as harmless as you might think. You certainly do not want your furry friend bringing their waste into your home on their paws.

Dog waste is considered a significant environmental pollutant and can pose health hazards to humans and animals. While not typically classified as "hazardous waste" it should be handled responsibly.

Here's the concern:
* Pathogens: Dog waste contains numerous harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause illness in humans and other animals.

These include:
   * Bacteria: E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

   * Parasites: Roundworms (Toxocara canis, which can cause organ damage and even blindness in humans), hookworms (which can penetrate skin), whipworms, Giardia, Cryptosporidium.

* Water Pollution: When left on the ground, dog waste is washed by rain and irrigation into storm drains, rivers, lakes, and other waterways. This introduces harmful bacteria and excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) into the water.

   * Bacterial Contamination: This can make water unsafe for swimming, fishing, and even drinking, and can lead to the closure of recreational areas.

   * Nutrient Pollution: The excess nitrogen and phosphorus act as fertilizer, leading to overgrowth of algae (algal blooms). These blooms deplete oxygen in the water, harming fish and other aquatic life.

* Environmental Imbalance: Dog waste is not a natural fertilizer for most ecosystems. Its high nitrogen and phosphorus content can disrupt the balance of local plant life and introduce foreign pathogens into natural habitats. Some medications and parasite treatments given to dogs can also be excreted in their feces, potentially harming insects and aquatic life.

* Airborne Contaminants: Dried dog waste can release allergens and bacteria into the air, potentially exacerbating respiratory issues.

*Proper disposal is crucial. A veterinary grade sanitation solution is key to stopping the spread of bacteria and viruses. Dog waste should be bagged and disposed of in a trash can. Never left on the ground, even in natural areas, as it can still lead to the problems mentioned above.
